Halloween Costumes for the Last Minute Girl

My whole life Halloween has been my favorite holiday! It's not only the start of the holiday season, but such a fun, light-hearted holiday. Growing up, my family didn't do any holiday big- I'm talking NO Christmas decorations, no extended family over for Thanksgiving, no sparklers for 4th of July, and no latkes for Hanukkah (yes I celebrate both, but that's a different story). Halloween was different though, my family went big! We decorated the whole house with spider webs, witches, pumpkins, dry ice, strobe lights, cats and more!

Besides the decorations, me and my little sister got to invite all the girls from our grades to our house for a Halloween Party every year. My mom arranged games, crafts, bobbing for apples, and a haunted house in our backyard. It was always a big extravaganza and most importantly, we got to pick out a new halloween costume every year! This is the most important part about halloween, right?

As I've grown up I've had a lot of different costumes, but I've also noticed the price tag that comes along with the costumes you can buy at basic halloween stores. In my college days, halloween became a week long event and I wasn't about to show up in the same costume to every party (let alone buy a $60 costume for each day)...this is when I became a master at DIY costumes.

If you were a last minute costume buyer like me, I'm sure you noticed all the good costumes were sold out by the time you got there, but basic pieces like ears, masks and hats are always left over! I'm going to show you SIX last minute costume ideas that are ALL affordable and can be completed with items found in your closet that can be worn again and again.

1. Bank Robber/Bandit

For this criminal costume all you need is a black and white stripe shirt, leather leggings or black pants, black boots and a beanie! All you need to purchase are a bandit mask, black gloves, and a canvas bag (that doubles as your purse)! I drew my own money sign on my canvas bag because it was about $13 cheaper than buying one with the money sign already on it! Just put a magazine in the bag and lay it flat on a table, draw a "$" sign on the front of the bag with sharpie and voila!  I love this costume because it is comfortable and fun, and also works great for a couple costume! The accessories for this costume are under $11!

2. Scarecrow

For this scarecrow costume you might already have most of these items in your closet. All you really need is a plaid shirt and a floppy hat. From there you can get as crazy as you want. It would be super cute with a button-up suede skirt or a suede mini dress, but it would also work with jeans or a denim mini skirt! Just pair it with neutral booties and you're good to go! To top off the costume do some scarecrow makeup. I linked a super easy video if makeup isn't your thing! If you don't already own these items, the price point can vary, but I linked some affordable options that can flow into your everyday wardrobe after Halloween is over!

3. Parisian

For this Parisian costume you need a black and white shirt, black pants, a neck scarf (which I'm sure you already own from the summer), a beret (which is a new trend that can be applied to every day style this fall/winter), and a cute pair of heels or ballet flats! Assuming you have all the basic pieces- all you have to purchase is the beret and I found  this super cute one for only $13! Oui Oui!

4. Minnie Mouse

The best part about this costume is that black and white polka dots are really popular right now and so easy to find! Accessorizing with burgundy items makes this costume more fashion forward. While it's important to stay true to the character, making small changes like adding pops of burgundy rather than red is just fine! I think the most important part about making these DIY costumes is making sure you will re-wear the items in the future. The only costume piece you need to buy are these Minnie ears for $9.99! I also linked a bunch of cute polka dot options!

5. Cat

In my opinion, a cat costume is the easiest costume you can do! Just buy all the leopard things! Pair them with leather leggings and cute ears and you're done! I don't think the leopard needs to match, in fact I think it's way more fun to be mismatched. Leopard is also making a major comeback this year, especially with accessories, so if you have to buy a couple items to complete your costume you'll definitely wear them again! I love that this top has bell sleeves and ruffles on the front, making it perfectly on trend! All you have to buy to complete the costume are these ears for $6.

When did being a witch for Halloween stop being a thing? It's such an easy costume and perfect for the spirit of the holiday. This is a very simple costume, just get a black lace dress, some black pumps or booties and a witch hat and you're good to go! Whatever black cocktail dress you choose can also be worn for New Years Eve. If you're worried about getting cold, you could also purchase a velvet cape to take your costume up a notch. I linked a few cute and affordable lace dresses from Forever 21 and this hat is only $3!
